A Letter from The Rioters Club

I’ve been inspired by one of my favourite “coming-of-age” films, The Breakfast Club, to write a post-riots detention essay for the House of Commons

Dear Parliament,

We accept the fact that we  should be held to account for whatever it is that we did wrong.

What we did WAS wrong.

But we think you’re crazy to pass unreasonable knee-jerk punishments on the young, disadvantaged and our families because of the prejudices you have against what  you think WE are, instead of the 80% of adults and privileged others arrested for rioting along with us.

What do you care?

You see us as you want to see us…in the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions. You see us all as feckless workshy mmoral scounging criminals.

Correct?

That’s how we probably saw each other at one time or another.

We were brainwashed – no less than by those in power who helped create this mess and refuse to accept any responsibility for it.

Does that answer your question?

Sincerely yours,

The Rioters Club
